Utila is one of the world’s nine predictable locations for finding these elusive creatures on a consistent basis. This makes Utila a premier location for whale shark research and encounters. Whale sharks can be spotted off the coast of Utila at any time of year,
The Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center promote responsible eco-tourism and offer the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with the largest living fish in the ocean, the whale shark. WSORC pride ourselves in promoting responsible interactions with whale sharks and follow strict encounter guideline procedures to avoid harassment of the shark and help make the most of your encounter experience.Check out one of our recent whale shark encounter trips with this excellent footage courtesy of James and Kristina!
Our encounter trips run throughout the year, but exact days and times are dependent on weather conditions, tides and recent sightings of whale sharks in the area. Morning trips usually depart at 8:30am and afternoon trips at 1:30pm. While whale sharks can be seen at any time of the year here in Utila; the frequency of sightings does vary. At WSORC we pride ourselves on running whale shark trips in such a way that gives you the best possible chance of a successful encounter. However we are a research center and if we do not look we cannot find, so sightings can never be guaranteed. We recommend you stop by out visitor center located right next door to the Bay Islands College of Diving on Main Street once you arrive on the island to check on our boat excursion schedule.
Trips cost $60 USD per person. This includes all snorkel gear rental, taxes, and reef fees. If you have your own snorkel gear cost is $54 USD.Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center.
