The Peace Corps is an American development organization composed of volunteers, and has been working continuously in Guatemala since 1963. Peace Corps Volunteers live in rural communities for two years, and work to build capacity and create sustainable development within the projects of Maternal & Child Health, Youth in Development, Healthy Schools, and Food Security & Agriculture. Volunteers frequently design and implement small-grant projects in their communities through the Peace Corps Partnership Program, which is funded through online donations.
Peace Corps Volunteers’ in Guatemala work on a variety of initiatives. Primary projects focus on food security, health, and youth:
Maternal and Child Health -MCH-
The purpose of the Maternal and Child Health project is to support national efforts to ensure that mothers and children of rural Guatemala live healthy lives.
Healthy Schools -HS-
The purpose of the Healthy Schools project is to improve the health status of rural students (grades K-6) through the sustainable and systematic practices of healthy habits.
Youth in Development -YiD-
The purpose of the Youth in Development project is for Guatemalan youth to be empowered to lead healthy lives and to assume positive roles in their communities and country.
Food Security -FS- Peace Corps Response
The purpose of the Food Security Peace Corps Response project is to improve the food and nutrition security of rural community members in the highlands of Guatemala.
